   Hoy el día está precioso, tibio, el jardín lleno de amarillos y naranjos y las últimas rosas todavía brillan con el sol, dan ganas de estar afuera, de que los niños corran por ahí. Pero la mañana es otra historia: el otoño ya se tiñe de invierno y deja una capa de hielo del terror sobre todo. Da tanta pena despertar a los niños oscuro y echarlos casi corriendo a ese frío! Sí sé, soy corazón de abuelita, pero no pude resistirlo e hicimos unos guateros de arroz para que los acompañen al auto y al colegio, y puedan llevar con ellos aunque sea por un rato el calor de la casa.

   Today we have a beautiful day, warm, the garden full of yellow and orange and the last roses still shine with the sun, make you want to be outside, and the kids to run around. But mornings are another story: the fall is dyed with winter, leaving an awful layer of ice over everything. It's such a pitty to wake the the kids while still dark and almost throw them on the run out to the cold! Yeah I know, I'm being a granny, but I couldn't resist it so we made a few rice warmers totake to the car and to school, so they can carry with them even for a while some home warmth.

   Cuando una de mis niñitas estaba en prekinder tenían en el colegio una semana en que eran protagonistas, contaban sobre su familia, sobre lo que les gustaba, leían su libro preferido al curso y así. El viernes, en el día de cierre de su semana, llevaban su comida favorita para compartirla con los niños al final del día. Yo: "Y entonces, ¿qué quieres llevar? ¿Cuál es tu comida preferida?" Ella: "Mamá, lo que más, más me gusta es ¡¡el aperitivo!!" Toda la razón!! Nada más rico. Es el eterno conflicto para nosotros, porque nos gusta a todos, pero los más chicos se lo zampan todo casi sin masticar y después no quieren almorzar, porque se llenaron. Entonces discurrimos una solución: una vez al mes por lo menos vamos a almorzar sólo aperitivo, de la fuente, compartido, hecho por nosotros y con cosas ricas y saludables.

   When one of my girls was in PreK at school they had a week in which they were main characters, talked about their family, about what they liked, read their favorite book to the group and so on. On Friday, the closing day of the week, they had to bring their favorite food to share with the kids at the end of the day. Me: "And then, what do you want to take to school? What's your favorite meal?" She: "Mom,what I like the most, most is appetizers!!" Absolutely right! Nothing nicer. It's the eternal conflict for us, because we all like it, but the younger ones would swallow everything almost without chewing and then they won't lunch, because they are filled. So we came up with a solution: once a month at least we will have appetizers for lunch, from the platter, shared, made by us and all healthy goodies.

   Hoy es un buen día. Es el cumpleaños de mi mamá linda y además empieza acá un esperado fin de semana largo. Algunos suertudos tienen libre hasta el martes! Los días están un poco fríos ya, así que está ideal para descansar mucho, relajarse y disfrutar en la casa.

   Hacen falta más almuerzos de domingo, de esos donde la sobremesa es más importante que la comida en sí, en los que el vapor del café y el agua de hierbas se va transformando en las historias que cuentan los tatas sobre la infancia, sobre cómo se conocieron o la primera casa donde vivieron, de cuando se quedaron en panne en medio de la nada, de cuando descubrieron unas cartas antiguas....Nos encantan, cierto? Todos tenemos tantas historias en cada familia! Y no es casualidad que nos gusten esas instancias: según un estudio publicado este mes, del que pueden leer más acá y acá, los niños que han sido criados escuchando estas historias son muchísimo más resilentes y manejan mejor el stress, transformándose en adultos capaces de enfrentar la vida y que están comprometidos con la sociedad.

   We need more Sunday lunches, the kind where the conversation is more important than the food itself, in which the steam of coffee and herbal tea is transformed into the stories that the grandparents tell about their childhood, on how they met or the first house where they lived in, when their car broke in the middle of nowhere, when they discovered some old letters .... We love them, right? We all have so many stories in each family! And it's no coincidence that we like those instances, according to a study published this month, from which you can read more here and here, children who have been raised hearing these stories are far more resilient and cope better with stress, becoming adults who can face life and who are committed to society.

   ¿Cuál es el motivo? Si cultivamos esas reuniones, nuestras tradiciones, ver fotos o contar historias de nuestro pasado estamos haciendo a los niños parte de esa familia, de una comunidad que tiene historia y que va a seguir hacia adelante tal como existió antes y eso les da seguridad y sentido de pertenencia. Incluso se llegó a la conclusión que los mejores resultados se dieron en las familias que compartieron altos y bajos, penurias y alegrías, tal como la vida es, porque mostraron a sus hijos cómo afrontar las cosas.

   What's the reason? If we cultivate these kind of meetings, our traditions, going through pictures or sharing stories of our past we are making  the kids part of that family, of a community that has history and it will go forward as it existed before and that feeling gives them confidence and sense of belonging. It even concluded that the best results were in families that shared ups and downs, hardships and joys, as life is, because they showed their children how to deal with things.

   Aparte, leí otro artículo en que demostraban en un estudio científico cómo calma a los hijos el que sus papás siquiera los toquen. El ritmo cardíaco bajaba en máximo 6 segundos! Y lo mismo pasa con muchos mamíferos. ¿Qué tal si los combinamos? Niño preocupado o estresado por algo + abrazo e historia de la vida = niño feliz!!

   Besides, I read another article that showed in a scientific study how even the touch of one parent could calm a child. The heart rate went down in maximum 6 seconds! And the same goes for many mammals. What if we combine them? Child worried or stressed about something + hug and history of life = happy child!

     ¿Les conté que el sábado estuvimos celebrando? Fue la Primera Comunión de una de las niñitas y vino el familión a acompañarla. Ella me pidió quequitos o cupcakes de chocolate, así que hice una torre, entre otras cosas. Usé una receta que ya les mostré hace algún tiempo (le agregué mucho chocolate amargo en polvo y hojas de earl grey) y llené los moldes hasta la mitad, pero lo que no he compartido con ustedes es cómo hacer la crema o frosting que va encima! A mí me gusta que sea fresco y liviano, con gustos reales, así que he adaptado otras recetas para que quede como quiero. A preparar la batidora, porque van a querer hacer muchos!

   Did I tell you that on Saturday we had a celebration? One of the girls made her First Communion and all our big family came to join her. She asked for chocolate cupcakes, so I made a tower, among other things. I used a recipe that I showed you some time ago (added lots of cocoa powder and earl gray leaves) and filled the liners to half, but what I haven't shared with you is how to make the cream or frosting that goes on top! I like it to be fresh and light, with real taste, so I've adapted other recipes to make it like I want it. So prepare the mixer, because you'll want to make a lot!

   En esta época del año se abre la temporada de la espera en la consulta médica y/o urgencia, esperando para hacer el exámen de la influenza, la radiografía...   Hola a todos! Un poco tarde, pero todavía es viernes. Ojalá que disfruten mucho de su fin de semana, acá tenemos una linda niñita que hace su Primera Comunión mañana, así que hemos tenido mucho que preparar para celebrarlo en familia. Para los que no tienen ningún evento, este fin de semana tiene dos entretenciones que pueden aprovechar: El sábado es el Día del Teatro, por eso la mayoría de las salas del país van a ofrecer funciones a precios especiales, muchas a sólo mil pesos! Además hay una nueva versión de la feria Más Deco Market, organizada por la revista del mismo nombre en la Estación Mapocho de Santiago, ahí se reúnen las mejores marcas del diseño nacional, muchas de nuestras preferidas, además de artistas (mis hermanas!) y artesanos. Si van en bici entran gratis y hay otros descuentos especiales también. Ambas cosas para no perdérselas!

   Este domingo es el día de la mamá, y para ayudarlos a poner en palabras cuánto las queremos, les dejamos unas lindas tarjetas para imprimir. Hay una con el frente listo y otra con un marco, para que los niños hagan un dibujo o escriban ustedes de su puño y letra. Quizás ya vieron una pista en el post anterior, o no?

   This Sunday is Mother's Day here, and to help you to put into words how much you love her, we made some nice printable cards.    Esta es semana para celebrarnos a nosotras y también a nuestras mamás y abuelas. No sé si opinen lo mismo, pero para mí la mejor celebración es pasar un fin de semana tranquilo sin todo el ajetreo y trabajo que hay el resto de los días. A veces eso significa preparar un poco las cosas antes. Por eso les voy a mostrar cómo hacer unos ricos merenguitos que podemos guardar en frascos para cuando los queramos regalar... o comer con un poco de majar o crema... qué rico! Son fáciles y mucho mejores que los comprados, vale la pena!

   This is week to celebrate us and our mothers and grandmothers. Don't know if you feel the same, but for me the best celebration is to spend a quiet weekend without all the hustle and work of the rest of the days. Sometimes that means making things a little ahead. So I'll show you how to make some delicious meringues we can keep in jars for when we want to give them away ... or eat them with a little dulce de leche or whipped cream ... yummy! They are easy to make and much better than bought ones, it's worth it!

   Cuando los árboles pierden las hojas en el otoño y empieza el frío, es el momento de podar, para que cuando despierten de ese estado de sueño que les trae el invierno puedan crecer con fuerzas nuevas. A veces hay árboles que ya han cumplido su ciclo, o ramas gruesas que hemos tenido que cortar. Yo tengo un árbol que firmó su sentencia este verano cuando creció sobre la ventana del baño y nos quitó toda la luz y sol. Así que podemos tener materia prima para esta linda tendencia, que lleva los troncos para adentro de nuestras casas, quizás para calefacción, también para servir como mobiliario, como parte de la arquitectura o incluso fundiéndose con los textiles. A buscar nuestros troncos!

   When trees lose their leaves in the fall and cold weather starts, it's time to prune, so that when they wake up from that sleep state that winter brings, they can grow with new strength. Sometimes there are trees that have already run its course, or thick branches that we had to cut. I have a tree that signed its sentence this summer when it grew over the bathroom window and took away all the light and sun.    Estos son como los primeros días con lluvia del año acá. Estaba realmente seco todo, y fue poco, faltó. Pero lo supe aprovechar: apenas cayeron las primeras gotas moví el auto a la intemperie para que se lavara! Los niños se reían a carcajadas y no podían creer cuando lo vieron tan limpio hoy. Eso es eficiencia y aprovechamiento del recurso hídrico! Cambiando el tema.... por fin es viernes! Sì!!!!

   These are like the first days with rain of this year here. Everything was really dry, and was too little, we're lacking more. But I knew how to take advantage of that: as the first drops fell I moved the car to the open rain for it to wash! The kids laughed out loud and couldn't believe it when they saw it as clean today. That's efficiency and use of water resources! Changing the subject .... it's finally Friday! Yay!!
